Watts can mislead: what you hear is size

With branded speakers, the stated power tells you very little on smaller models. A 3 W mini and a 10 W compact speaker can sound similar in volume, but the second has more internal space and often a passive radiator, which is where the bass comes from. Below about 6 cm in diameter, you will barely get any low end whatever watts are claimed. If the speaker will be used in the kitchen, on the terrace or in a workshop, choose a desk model; if it is for a desk or suitcase, a mini does the job and keeps the order cost down.

There are three other details worth checking on the product page: the Bluetooth version (5.0 or above gives a more stable connection), battery life at medium volume and the charging connector, which really ought to be USB-C now. If the speaker is going out and about, check water resistance too.

Water resistance: what each rating means

The rating is declared by the manufacturer for each model. None is designed for continuous use under water.

Catalogue formats and what each one is for

• Pocket mini, often with a carabiner: broad giveaway use, desks and travel.
• Compact fabric or recycled plastic: the middle ground for a team gift.
• Bamboo, cork or aluminium: the most understated finish, with laser engraving, for clients or senior management.
• Water-resistant for outdoor use: for teams who work or travel outside.
• With extra features, such as a light, solar charging or a wireless charging base: useful if the feature suits the recipient, not just for adding things on.

How they are customised

• Your logo goes on the casing, usually between 25 and 40 mm wide: pad printing or UV printing on plastic and aluminium; laser engraving on bamboo, cork or aluminium.
• On fabric models, printing on the grille loses definition, so it is usually placed on a smooth area of the casing.
• The price on each product page includes one-colour printing in the standard position; extra colours or another technique are quoted in the quote.
• Send us the logo as a vector file (SVG, AI or PDF) and you will receive the free mock-up within 24 working hours. You pay when you approve it, and production usually takes two or three weeks.

Order a sample: you cannot hear sound in a photo

With electronics, we always recommend ordering a sample before the full run, and with a speaker more than with almost anything else: it is the only way to hear how it sounds at high volume, how heavy it feels and whether the buttons respond properly. Try it with a couple of different phones too: pairing and range can vary from one to another. Because it contains a lithium battery, transport follows stricter rules, so if you have a fixed delivery date, allow enough time. When it makes sense to give a speaker

A speaker works well in a new starter pack, as a summer gift and as recognition for a specific team. It does not end up in a drawer, but it costs more than a mass giveaway item, so it works better in tens or a few hundred units than handed out across a whole stand; for that, there are lighter options among promotional gifts.

As a guide: for a broad giveaway, a pocket mini; for a team or a welcome gift, a compact fabric model; for clients or senior management, bamboo or aluminium, which stand comparison with a speaker bought in a shop. Bamboo, cork and recycled plastic models are the natural choice if your purchasing policy follows eco-friendly merchandise criteria.

At an event, decide first whether the speaker is a prize for a few people or a gift for every attendee, because that changes the model and the quantity.
